Benztropine mesylate is indicated as an adjunct therapy for all forms of parkinsonism. It is also used to control extrapyramidal disorders (excluding tardive dyskinesia) resulting from neuroleptic drug therapy, such as phenothiazines. The medication serves as a supplemental treatment to improve motor control and reduce symptoms such as tremors and rigidity.
How BENZTROPINE MESYLATE Works
Benztropine mesylate is a centrally acting agent that possesses both anticholinergic (antimuscarinic) and antihistaminic effects. It acts as a competitive antagonist at muscarinic acetylcholine receptors in the corpus striatum. By blocking these receptors, it helps restore the functional balance between cholinergic and dopaminergic neurotransmission, which is disrupted in parkinsonism and drug-induced extrapyramidal reactions.
