VERSACLOZ (clozapine) · DOUGLAS PHARMS

CNS Approved 2013-02-06

VERSACLOZ (clozapine) is an atypical antipsychotic indicated for the treatment of severely ill patients with schizophrenia who have failed to respond adequately to standard antipsychotic treatments. Due to the risks of severe neutropenia and seizures, the medication is reserved for treatment-resistant cases. It is also used to reduce the risk of recurrent suicidal behavior in patients with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder who are judged to be at chronic risk for such behavior.

How VERSACLOZ Works

While the exact mechanism of action is unknown, the therapeutic efficacy of clozapine is proposed to be mediated through the antagonism of dopamine type 2 (D2) and serotonin type 2A (5-HT2A) receptors. By blocking these receptors, the drug helps manage the symptoms of schizophrenia and related disorders. Additionally, the medication acts as an antagonist at various adrenergic, cholinergic, histaminergic, and other dopaminergic and serotonergic receptors.
