DALVANCE (dalbavancin hydrochloride) · AbbVie

Infectious Disease Approved 2014-05-23

Dalvance is a lipoglycopeptide antibacterial indicated for the treatment of acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSSI) in adult and pediatric patients. It is effective against designated susceptible strains of Gram-positive microorganisms, including *Staphylococcus aureus* (including MRSA), *Streptococcus pyogenes*, *Streptococcus agalactiae*, *Streptococcus dysgalactiae*, the *Streptococcus anginosus* group, and vancomycin-susceptible *Enterococcus faecalis*. To maintain effectiveness and reduce the development of drug-resistant bacteria, Dalvance should be reserved for infections proven or strongly suspected to be caused by these susceptible bacteria.

How DALVANCE Works

Dalbavancin is a lipoglycopeptide that exerts bactericidal activity by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to the D-alanyl-D-alanine terminus of nascent peptidoglycan chains, preventing the cross-linking (transpeptidation) and polymerization (transglycosylation) necessary for cell wall stability. This leads to bacterial cell lysis and death. Its lipophilic side chain enhances its binding affinity and contributes to its prolonged half-life.
