ZIANA (clindamycin phosphate)
Ziana is a topical gel that treats acne vulgaris in patients 12 years of age and older. This medication combines a lincosamide antibiotic with a retinoid to help patients manage their skin condition. It is used to address the formation of acne lesions through its dual-action formula.
How ZIANA Works
Ziana utilizes a dual mechanism of action. Clindamycin, a lincosamide antibiotic, binds to the 50S ribosomal subunits of susceptible bacteria, inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis and reducing the population of *Cutibacterium acnes*. Tretinoin decreases the cohesiveness of follicular epithelial cells, which inhibits the formation of microcomedones. Additionally, tretinoin stimulates mitotic activity and increases the turnover of follicular epithelial cells, facilitating the extrusion of existing comedones.
